For those of you who use the ‘book of faces’ there’s a group devoted to Canberra poetry slams set up by my lovely housemate. Another easy way to keep track of the slams as they come up.

Speaking of which… don’t forget about the Benedict House poetry slam in Queanbeyan (more info in this post).

Videos

22 November 2008

You can now view videos of the winners from the ACT Australian Poetry Slam heats performing their poems in exotic Canberra locations… watch and find out how each of them answers tricky questions such as ‘What will you do if you win?’

  1. Adam Hadley*
  2. Omar Musa
  3. David Finnigan**/***

*Featuring best ever unplanned interruption EVER!
**Thanks for the name check!
***What’s with cranking up the bass when you’re talking about what happens when stuff goes wrong – it’s a damned conspiracy!

I am bitterly, bitterly disappointed that I won’t be going up to watch these fine lads duke it out with the other Australian Slam winners. I just didn’t get my act together in time, and now I’m swamped… speaking of which, check back very soon for exciting announcements for 2009!

More ‘me’ stuff…

11 November 2008

If you’re interested in seeing my performance for Stateline you can stream the video (check out those Dutch tilts man!) on the ABC website. I’m in the middle, after Dennis Wild (last year’s Australian Poetry Slam ACT runner up) and before Shorn Bark… If you’ve never come to a slam before don’t worry, you don’t need a beard and glasses to take part.

There’s also a transcript of the episode which contains the full text of my poem ‘Lost Thoughts’, although the transcription was off in a couple of places (for example, I say ‘weapons of mass distraction‘ not ‘weapons of mass destruction‘). If anyone’s interested I can post the latest text.

One other ‘me’ thing – my play ‘The Worst DJ in the World’ is being performed as part of Damned if You Duo 4: Voyage of the Damned which opens tomorrow at Belconnen Theatre and runs until Friday (8-11pm). It’s a blood-curdling cautionary tale of what happens if you meddle with Ultimate Super DJ Powers. Tickets only $5 – get along and see it!

Halloween slam lowdown…

2 November 2008

Friday night’s Halloween slam was great fun (although a little on the quiet side – to be expected with Stonefest, Reclaim the Night and a bunch of other events on at the same time)…  Nevertheless ’twas lovely to see all of the kids (and big kids) dressed up, getting into the spookiness of the day.

We boosted the scary factor inside The Front by (silently) projecting Nosferatu and Plan 9 from Outer Space behind the performers. I thought it might be too distracting for the audience but everyone seemed to enjoy it. My haunted house poem went down well, as did the other Halloween-themed entries. The winners were:

  1. Liz Beaton
  2. Seung Baek
  3. Hadley

Andrew Walker did us a treat by playing well into the night – astounding variety of music for one man and his guitar.
